BIOGRAPHY

Murder Construct is a American deathgrind band from Los Angeles, California. The band members include Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Leon del Muerte (Exhumed, D.I.S., ex-Impaled, ex-Phobia), Kevin Fetus (Watch me Burn, Fetus Eaters), Caleb Schneider (Bad Acid Trip) and Danny Walker (Intronaut, Exhumed, ex-Jesu, ex-Uphill Battle).

Formed in 2001 after his departure from Impaled, Leon del Muerte set to create a more raw, stripped down version of the music he was currently writing with other bands.

After a hiatus of nearly a decade, during which del Muerte had been involved with Exhumed (again), Intronaut and Phobia, the band was put back together with new songs and a new direction.

Featuring the talents of Danny Walker (Intronaut, Jesu, Exhumed, Phobia), Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Kevin Bernier (Watch Me Burn, Fetus Eaters) and Caleb Schneider (Bad Acid Trip), the debut Murder Construct EP features 7 songs of extra intense grind with odd flourishes and pummeling execution.

The band recently signed with Relapse Records and will have an EP out in late 2010.

Metalreview.com

Murder Construct is a West Coast super group grind project featuring Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Leon del Muerte (Exhumed, Intronaut, Impaled), Kevin Fetus (Watch Me Burn, Fetus Eaters), Caleb Schneider (Bad Acid Trip) and Danny Walker (Exhumed, Uphill Battle, Intronaut, Jesu, Bastard Noise, Phobia ). And the result is what you'd expect - a furious seventeen minute grindcore assault based around Ryan's robust vocals and the musicianship of several talented veterans of extreme music.

With Cattle Decapitation delving into sickly sludgy throes, Impaled turning into a more melodic Carcass-worshiping power house and Intronaut's bluesy post-rock brilliance (I can't really speak for Watch Me Burn or Bad Acid Trip), Murder Construct allows the more high-profile members to unleash their recently repressed brutal side as Murder Construct's salvoes are pure but modern-tinged grindcore filled with Napalm Death-ish power chords and grooves, and on par with drummer Danny Walker's full time band, But it remains to be seen if this side project can yet be compared to those legendary bands in the long term despite the promise of this EP.

However, all things indicate that, if this develops into a long-term project, it could be special. Ryan dominates the sound with his festering, snot- and drool-filled roars and is less focused on social-political commentary and more with vocal savagery. Ranging from 1 to 3 minutes, the songs are perfectly timed salvos with no 10-second burps or overly drawn-out or experimental numbers (though there are a couple of tiny slivers of ambiance). From blistering then lumbering opener "Control", through the sick jaunt of "No Savior" and the devastating "I am That" to closer "Submission", the material is about as perfectly executed grindcore as there is, melding furious yet catchy blasts and decimating grooves in violent harmony, but that should not be a surprise considering the talent involved.

The production is also of note, with a beefy but clean tone that seems to cull from all the bands members' collective projects. With Relapse trying desperately to fill Mastodon's shoes, it's great to see the label still kicking out some quality grindcore with Murder Construct being their second top-notch grindcore supergroup EP, along with Criminal Element's Crime and Punishment.

onemetal.com

It has already been quite a trip for Murder Construct. According to guitarist Leon Del Muerten, the 'supergroup' have been weaving in and out of various bands through the years, and in fact Murder Construct began about a decade ago, but it has taken this long to find suitably minded band members who were on the same page - and more importantly, all located in the same area.

The band are made up of Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Leon del Muerte (Exhumed, D.I.S., ex-Impaled, ex-Phobia), Kevin Fetus (Watch me Burn, Fetus Eaters), Caleb Schneider (Bad Acid Trip) and Danny Walker (Intronaut,Exhumed, ex-Jesu, ex-Uphill Battle). I don't normally go into lists like that but if you note all those "ex"s you will know how difficult it was to finally pull this together.Considering the lengths they must have to take to actually be present in the same room, this is a solid and well constructed release. It leans to the more metallic side of grind rather than the punk and noise end of the spectrum, so the listener is confronted with a sound that's more similar to the likes of Brutal Truth and mid-era Napalm Death than the D-beat-obsessed likes of Skitsystem. More importantly, there are plenty of devastating riffs, and Murder Construct is seriously heavy on the production front.

Danny Walker's drumming on this record is probably the fastest of his career, and in terms of punishing velocity is up there with the likes of hyperspeed tech-death merchants Brain Drill - albeit without the occasionally over-produced vibe that bands falls prey to - his kit retains the acoustic balance and dynamics without the silly electro-stabs that you find in other band's breakdowns. 'Construct' kicks off the album in a way that Cannibal Corpse would be proud of - heavy riffs, and a gruelling and lengthy scream from vocalist Travis Ryan. For the next few minutes it is pretty tough and intense deathgrind, but once the album settles down a bit during 'I Am That' and 'Destroy Babylon' - the latter even containing something resembling a guitar solo - you get to appreciate more of the whole sound of the band rather them them constantly spewing vicious noise in your ears. It is actually more melodic than I am making out, and rarely drifts towards the Nasum droning sound; instead, Ryan forms an almost Black Metal squeal at the end of 'Submission'.

What sets this record apart from its peers is the exploration of sounds and influences which undoubtedly have come from all the members previous bands. And all in a short 18mins!
